Optics for logistics

Lenses for logistics applications

The use of optical systems increases the efficiency, safety and reliability of logistics chains by automatically identifying goods and deliveries and monitoring maintenance and inspection processes. Vision systems can scan the dimensions and volume of objects to calculate weight and palletise them.

Parcel Sorting

Machine vision technologies play an important role in the automated sorting of parcels in parcel centers. One of the most important applications is the use of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. This enables the system to recognize and read the address on the parcel and then route it to the correct department. This technology uses algorithms that are capable of recognising and classifying characters on an image by analyzing the geometric properties  of the letters and the distribution of the pixels.

Another important element of image processing technology in packet sorting is the scan of barcodes for the smooth operation of the logistical processes.

Volume Measurement

Vision technologies have become an indispensable part of modern industrial production and logistics. One important application is volume measurement, where the size and volume of objects need to be accurately determined. This can be important, for example, in food processing, product quality control or sorting parcels in logistics.

One way of measuring volume is by using 3D cameras. They capture the object from multiple perspectives to create a 3D model. With the help of special algorithms, the volume of the object can then be calculated. Another method is to use laser scanners, which create an exact image of the object and can thus determine the volume.

Bin Picking

Vision technologies are increasingly being used in automation, particularly in what is known as bin picking. Bin picking refers to the process of automatically removing objects from a cluttered environment, such as a bin or shelf. The use of vision technologies in bin picking enables the detection and location of the position and orientation of objects in the bin. Cameras and light sources are typically used to detect and analyse the objects.

One of the most important applications of vision technology in bin-picking is the use of 3D cameras to capture depth information of objects. Using this information, the system can accurately determine the position and orientation of the objects, making bin picking more accurate and faster. In addition, image processing algorithms such as pattern recognition, image analysis and machine learning are used to automatically identify and classify the objects. This enables the system to select the right items and transport them to the right location.
