B+W Infrared filter

Making the invisible visible. Create creative, surreal looks.

The new IR 830 infrared filter allows you to explore creative possibilities beyond the visible light spectrum. By selectively blocking visible light while allowing infrared radiation to pass through, the filter produces surreal, eye-catching infrared photos.

Thanks to the new nano (Super Top Coat) coating, the glass surface is protected from dirt, fingerprints, and dust, and it is easy to clean. Compared to uncoated infrared filters, the 830 infrared filter offers significantly greater convenience and practicality for everyday use while maintaining the highest level of optical precision and “Made in Germany” image quality.

The IR 830 infrared filter is available in the MASTER filter holder in diameters ranging from 37 to 86 mm.

B+W Infrared Filter

Basics

  • Always determine the framing and focus before attaching the IR filter.
  • Perform a manual white balance with the filter attached.
  • Set the camera to black-and-white or monochrome mode.

Exposure & Optics

  • Use a small aperture (high f-number) for optimal depth of field.
  • Exposure times vary greatly depending on the subject, lighting, and camera. Experiment!
  • Since there is no standard IR exposure, exposure bracketing is recommended.
  • Due to the long exposure times, a stable tripod is essential.

Lighting & Image Effect

  • Light coming from the side or behind creates strong contrasts and a typical IR effect.

Camera & Shooting

  • Shoot in RAW format for maximum flexibility in post-processing.
  • Use the remote control test to check the camera’s IR sensitivity.

Post-processing

  • To achieve the characteristic IR look: Adjust the contrast, white balance, and details.
