Beamsplitter lenses

Overview of lenses with beamsplitter

Black lens with beamsplitter where the mirror is visible

A beamsplitter plays a crucial role in optical systems that use coaxial illumination. It enables uniform, shadow-free lighting by directing light along the same optical axis as the lens. When integrated into specialised lenses, the beam splitter divides the incoming light into two paths: one beam illuminates the object, while the other is used for image capture. This configuration ensures consistent image quality, particularly in applications such as high-precision inspection and machine vision.

Lenses with built-in beam splitters are ideal for applications requiring high-contrast imaging without interference from external lighting. To explore compatible lens options, visit the individual product family pages.

The function of a beamsplitter in an optical system

A beamsplitter is an optical device designed to divide a single light beam into two separate beams. It typically consists of a transparent substrate, such as glass, coated with a partially reflective surface. When integrated into a lens system, a beamsplitter enables light to be redirected and imaged simultaneously, without altering its wavelength. This makes them ideal for applications requiring wavelength-independent light separation, such as periscopes, rangefinders and optical interferometers. Beamsplitters are also highly effective in complex optical inspection and metrology systems, where precision and flexibility are critical.

Schneider-Kreuznach lens families with a beamsplitter

Lenses with integrated beamsplitters use coaxial illumination, i.e. the light falls on the specimen parallel to the optical axis of the lens. This provides a uniform and shadow-free illumination of the specimen. The beamsplitter divides the incoming light beam into two partial beams. One beam is used to illuminate the object and the other beam is used for image acquisition. The following lenses are available with beamsplitter.
